When a customer pays in XRP, the funds arrive in your wallet in seconds. What happens next depends on how you manage your finances. Some merchants convert to local currency on a regular schedule. Others hold XRP and convert in larger batches. This guide covers both approaches and explains the conversion process for the main markets where DropPay merchants operate: Japan, South Korea, Nigeria, Argentina, Europe, and the United States.
Timing your conversions
There is no deadline for converting XRP. It stays in your wallet until you initiate the sale. The timing decision involves two trade-offs: how much exposure you want to XRP price fluctuations, and how many fee events you want to accumulate.
Converting after every payment eliminates price exposure but means more frequent conversion fees. Converting weekly or monthly reduces the number of fee events but means holding XRP for longer. Most merchants settle on a weekly or monthly schedule depending on their payment volume.
For merchants in markets with currency instability, converting to USDT rather than local currency as a first step is common. This hedges against local currency depreciation while leaving flexibility on when to convert to the final local amount.
How the conversion process works
Regardless of your region, the process follows the same three stages.
DropPay recommends using Xaman as your receiving wallet. XRP arrives there directly after each payment confirms. From Xaman you have two options: send the XRP to your local exchange and sell for local currency, or swap to RLUSD directly within Xaman. The RLUSD swap is the faster route if you want to protect against price movements - you stay on the XRP Ledger but hold a USD-pegged stablecoin until you are ready to cash out through your exchange.
- Transfer XRP to an exchange. Your receiving wallet holds the XRP after each payment. To convert it, you send it to an exchange that supports both XRP deposits and your local currency withdrawals. If you hold XRP in a self-custody wallet like Xaman, you initiate a send transaction to your exchange deposit address. If you receive XRP directly into an exchange account, it is already there.
- Sell XRP for local currency. Most exchanges offer a direct XRP/local currency pair. Where one is not available, you can swap to RLUSD within Xaman first, then convert RLUSD to local currency through your exchange. Most regional exchanges that support stablecoin deposits will accept RLUSD.
- Withdraw to your bank account. After the sale, withdraw the local currency balance to your bank. Processing times vary by platform and region. Most major exchanges complete bank withdrawals within 1 to 3 business days. Some regions have faster options depending on the payment network available.
Exchange options by region
Japan. Japan has among the highest XRP retail adoption globally, and domestic exchanges reflect this. Bitflyer, GMO Coin, SBI VC Trade, and Coincheck all support XRP/JPY trading with yen withdrawal to Japanese bank accounts. All regulated Japanese exchanges hold a Financial Services Agency license. Withdrawals to Japanese bank accounts are typically processed same-day or next-day.
South Korea. Upbit, Bithumb, and Coinone are the main domestic platforms, all supporting XRP/KRW pairs with Korean bank account withdrawals. Korean exchanges require real-name verification linked to a Korean bank account under local regulations, so they primarily serve Korean residents. Non-residents can use international exchanges and route XRP through USDT as an intermediate currency.
Nigeria. Binance P2P is widely used for naira conversion, allowing direct sale to other users. Yellow Card supports multiple African currencies including naira. Bybit and other global platforms offer P2P options in the Nigerian market. Bank withdrawals typically take 1 to 3 business days. Some Nigerian merchants prefer to swap to RLUSD within Xaman first to manage naira volatility before converting.
Argentina. Ripio and Buenbit are Argentina-based exchanges with peso pairs and local bank withdrawal. Lemon Cash operates across parts of Latin America. Due to currency controls and inflation, many Argentine merchants prefer to swap to RLUSD within Xaman first and convert to pesos based on current rates and their immediate needs.
Europe. Kraken, Bitstamp, and Coinbase all support XRP/EUR pairs with SEPA bank withdrawals across the eurozone. SEPA withdrawals typically settle in 1 to 2 business days at low or no cost. UK-based merchants can use Kraken or Coinbase for GBP withdrawals via Faster Payments.
United States. Coinbase, Kraken, and Gemini are the primary regulated options for US merchants. All support XRP/USD trading and ACH bank withdrawals. ACH typically takes 1 to 3 business days. Some platforms offer faster withdrawal options for eligible accounts.
Always verify that an exchange currently operates in your country before depositing funds. Exchange availability and local regulations change. Check the platform's supported countries list and current operating status before creating an account.
Minimizing conversion fees
- Convert in batches. Each conversion carries a spread and often a flat withdrawal fee. Converting weekly or monthly rather than after every individual payment reduces the total number of fee events.
- Check the spread before selling. Market orders fill immediately at the available price. Limit orders let you set a target price but may take longer to fill. For larger conversions, the spread difference is meaningful.
- Use low-cost withdrawal methods. SEPA (Europe) and ACH (USA) withdrawals are generally cheaper than wire transfers. Use them where available.
- Compare fees across platforms. Some exchanges charge flat withdrawal fees; others charge a percentage. At higher volumes, a flat fee is often better value. Review fee schedules before choosing a primary exchange.
Tax considerations
In most countries, converting XRP to local currency is a taxable event. Selling XRP is treated as a disposal of an asset. The gain or loss is generally the difference between what the XRP was worth when you received it and the price at which you sold it.
DropPay records the XRP amount and the local currency equivalent at the time of each payment. The CSV export (available on the Pro plan) gives you a complete transaction record for accounting. Combine this with your exchange trade history for full cost-basis tracking.
Tax rules for crypto assets vary significantly by country. Consult a local accountant or tax professional familiar with crypto reporting in your jurisdiction before deciding how to handle record-keeping and filing.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to convert immediately after receiving payment? No. XRP stays in your wallet indefinitely. Many merchants convert weekly or monthly to keep conversion fees manageable and reduce the number of taxable events.
What if there is no XRP/local currency pair on my exchange? Swap XRP to RLUSD within Xaman first, then send RLUSD to your exchange and convert to local currency. This keeps the intermediate step on the XRP Ledger and avoids holding a volatile asset while you wait to cash out.
How do I match received XRP to specific customer payments? DropPay's transaction records include the XRP amount, currency equivalent, and timestamp for each payment. The CSV export on Pro gives you a complete record. Each XRP transaction also has a unique hash on the XRP Ledger that can be used for verification.
What if XRP price drops after I receive a payment? If you convert soon after receiving payment, price movements have minimal impact. If you hold XRP for longer periods, price fluctuations affect the local currency amount you receive on conversion. This is a trade-off to factor into your conversion schedule.
