You delivered the work. The client approved it. Now you wait. Bank transfers from international clients typically take 3 to 5 business days. Wise and similar services cut that to 1 to 2 days in some corridors. PayPal is faster but takes 3.4% plus a fixed fee and is unavailable to many clients. The delay is accepted as standard. It does not have to be.
Why freelance payments take so long
Most cross-border payments travel through the SWIFT network: a messaging system that routes payment instructions between banks. Each institution in the chain processes independently, which is why "3 to 5 business days" is an estimate rather than a guarantee. On top of the delay, fees are charged at the sending bank, sometimes at intermediary banks, and sometimes at the receiving end.
Services like Wise improved on SWIFT by holding local currency pools in multiple countries and settling peer-to-peer. This is faster and cheaper in supported corridors. Nigeria to Japan is a different experience from Germany to France. Coverage is uneven and settlement still takes hours to days.
How XRP payments change the timeline
XRP transactions settle on the XRP Ledger in 3 to 5 seconds. There are no banking intermediaries, no routing delays, and no deductions by correspondent banks. The network fee is under one cent, paid by the sender. The amount your client sends is the amount you receive.
DropPay handles the payment page, the XRP conversion from your invoice currency, and confirmation when payment lands. You set the amount in USD. Your client sees the USD price and the XRP equivalent at checkout.
Getting set up
- Create a DropPay account at droppayxrp.com/signup. Add your XRP wallet address in Settings. This is where all payments arrive. If you do not have a wallet yet, How to Get an XRP Wallet covers the process.
- Create a Payment Link. From the dashboard, set the amount in your invoice currency and generate the link. Share it with your client by email, WhatsApp, or include it directly in your invoice document.
- Client pays. Your client opens the link, sees the amount in your currency and the XRP equivalent, and pays using their XRP wallet or exchange account. The funds arrive in your wallet in seconds.
- Convert when ready. XRP stays in your wallet until you choose to sell. Convert to local currency on your preferred exchange schedule. The XRP conversion guide covers this for Japan, South Korea, Nigeria, Argentina, Europe, and the US.
For clients new to XRP
Clients need an XRP wallet to pay. For clients already using a crypto exchange, paying in XRP is a familiar process. For clients new to it, the steps are: create an account on any major exchange, buy XRP, and send to the payment link address. The How to Pay with XRP page covers this in a format you can share directly with clients.
XRP has meaningful retail adoption in Japan, South Korea, parts of the US and Europe, and growing markets in Nigeria and Argentina. Freelancers with clients in these markets will find XRP payment familiarity higher than they expect. For clients in markets with lower XRP presence, offering it as an additional payment option alongside your existing method lets clients self-select.
The accounting side
DropPay records the local currency equivalent at the time of each payment. The Pro plan's CSV export gives you a full transaction record for your accountant: date, amount, currency equivalent, and XRP transaction hash. You convert to local currency on your own schedule and track that conversion through your exchange records.
Free plan supports up to 25 payments per month with no monthly cost and no transaction fees. Pro at $9.99 per month removes that limit and adds CSV export, webhooks, and API access.
Frequently asked questions
What if the client's country restricts certain exchanges? Most major global exchanges operate across the markets where DropPay freelancers are active. In restricted markets, P2P trading platforms are widely used. Clients choose their own path to acquiring XRP. You share the payment link; they handle acquisition.
What currency do I set prices in? USD. DropPay works in USD only - it is the only currency available when creating a payment link or invoice. DropPay converts the USD amount to XRP at the live rate when your client opens the link. Your dashboard records the USD amount for each payment.
How do I handle deposits and final payments? Create a separate Payment Link for each payment. One for the deposit, one for the final amount. Each link has its own amount and its own confirmation. Pro supports unlimited active payment links.
What about tax when I convert XRP to local currency? In most countries, converting XRP to local currency is a taxable event. Keep records of the XRP amount received and the local currency equivalent at the time of payment. DropPay's transaction records and CSV export provide this. Consult a local tax professional for reporting requirements in your jurisdiction.
